Lighting Design for the Theatre, Rick Holen

Learning Objective: Participants will have a basic understanding of drafting and circuit assignment to create area lighting for the stage. A demonstration of the lighting system of the Backus Community Center auditorium will be presented.


Theatre Makeup Techniques, Rick Holen

Learning Objective: Following a lecture on basic stage makeup techniques, participants will be able to apply methods to include aging an actor. Each participant will receive a basic make-up kit to use during the class.


Introduction to Puppeteering, Declan Lowthian

2 hour per day workshop, June 17-21

Ages 7+ | Cost TBD—part of Summer Art Week

Learning Objective: Participants will learn the different styles of puppets, create, and build a hand puppet following design elements. Character development will follow. Workshop will end with a short performance based on the puppets created.


Children’s Theatre Camp, Declan Lowthian

2 hour per day workshop, June 17-21

Ages 7+ | Cost TBD—part of Summer Art week

Learning Objective: Focus will be placed on developing a basic stage presence and spatial movement. Participants will explore basic script reading and performing spoken word on stage. Character development will also be included. Workshop will end with a short performance based on the participants’ feedback.

Introduction to Play Writing, Forrest Musselman

Date: September 7 and 8

Saturday, 10am – 5pm; Sunday 1 – 4pm

Ages: 9 + | Cost: TBD

Learning Objectives:

· Gain knowledge of general format of a script

· Develop introductory skills necessary to adapt a novel or book into script format

· Recognize common mistakes, or items to avoid, when writing a script

· How to market and sell your script

The Play Writing workshop will be followed by a script writing contest for performances of 30 minutes or less. Winners of the contest will see their pieces performed by Borealis Bards in the 2020 Room to Act dinner theatre event. Scripts are due by November 18, 2019. More direction and criteria will be released in the near future.
