Artists & Models Ball - May 16
Artists & Models Ball - May 16
In 1960, an annual event called the “Artists and Models Ball” began in Hollywood. Known as the yearly Motion Picture, Television, Radio and Music Industries Halloween Happening, this spectacular event attracted Hollywood stars and entertainment industry insiders. The Ball featured an eight-category costume contest judged by a celebrity panel, along with live music and dancing.
The idea took off and was popular in places like New York, Chicago, and right here in International Falls, and similar to the events in Chicago and New York, the Artists and Models Ball in the Falls was used as a fundraiser.
When Ray Berg was still in the Backus art room teaching junior high, he started the event in the Falls as a costume party with live music, patterned after the parties happening across the country, and, at least in the later years, it included an art auction.
On May 16th, Backus is going to host a similar event. Set with a 1920s theme, they will have hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, bubbly drinks, live music, and an auction to raise money for theater upgrades at Backus.
The tickets are $25 each, and that includes hors d’oeuvres, live music, and an auction for a chance to purchase some great art.
People are encouraged to dress in 1920s style, which always adds to the fun!
